Sheriff Robert "Bob" McCabe was first elected in 1993 and is currently serving his fourth term in office.
As Sheriff, he has instituted an unprecedented number of crime prevention and safety programs for citizens;
education and career development opportunities for inmates and work force assistance for city facilities and events.
During his more than 25 year law enforcement career, Sheriff McCabe worked as a Norfolk Police Officer for twelve
years and a Corrections Officer for the Department of Corrections. In addition to serving as Sheriff, McCabe is an
adjunct professor of criminal justice at Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College. He holds a Masters
of Public Administration with a concentration in Administration of Justice from Troy University; and a Bachelor of Arts
in Criminology from St. Leo University.
Among his numerous accolades, Sheriff McCabe is the President of the Virginia Sheriff's Association, the primary voice
for Virginia sheriffs in the General Assembly with more than 6500 sheriffs and deputy sheriffs. In 2005, he earned
the Humanitarian Award from the National Conference for Community and Justice. In 2004, he was named Executive of
the Year from the Tidewater Chapter, Int'l Assoc. of Administrative Professionals. McCabe is among Strathmore's
Who's Who of Business Leaders and has served as Grand Marshall of Norfolk's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Sheriff McCabe is a Navy veteran and Norfolk native. He and his wife Janet have three sons.
