CHOICES WITH DEPUTY BOB AND FRIENDS

The Norfolk Sheriff's Office, under Sheriff Robert J. McCabe, sponsors the "Choices with Deputy Bob and Friends" ventriloquist programs to Norfolk schools (PreK - 5th grades).

Master "Deputy Bob" Walsh presents these youth programs to schools, recreation centers, and summer camps. These entertaining and educational ventriloquist programs are well received by community leaders.

Off-duty "Deputy Bob and Friends" presented twenty character education shows in China recently. Specifically, they performed ventriloquist shows for the Hong Kong Yew Chung International Schools in Hong Kong; the Shunde Government Kindergarten Schools in Shunde; the Yantai Yew Wah International School in Yantai; and, the Beijing Yew Chung International School in Beijing.

Ventriloquism is Bob's ministry to teach lessons of character, safety and faith to children. He believes these ventriloquist shows lay important building blocks for children to make a healthy transition to adulthood. Bob does not charge a fee but accepts a donation or a free will offering for off-duty ventriloquist shows for kid and family groups.

The "Choices with Deputy Bob and Friends" ventriloquist shows include four professional figures: Inmate Joe, Deputy Matthew, Jeremiah Student, and Grandpa who alternate telling life stories. Why a story? Children and adults love stories! That's why we read books and watch movies. Stories are part of the human experience. They help us undertand ourselves and others better. Children don't need to learn bad habits but they do need to learn good ones. Deputy Bob's shows offer an alternative to the negative pushes and pulls that affect our children and grandchildren.

A syllabus of topics is provided on this page to assist you in selecting a program for your school or youth group. More information is available about Deputy Bob at the www.deputybob.com web site.

Community Leaders and Educators have commented:

  • My students and I have had the pleasure of seeing several of his shows. I have witnessed the excitement and the enthusiasm generated by his performances. Not only are he and his "puppets" entertaining, but the children learn valuable lessons from the experience as well.--Betty Maxwell
  • Your message was wonderful and you really held the children's attention. That's not so easy with children today. You certainly have an evangelistic spirit and great job that you enjoy. I am sure the Lord has blessed you for your efforts. You are terrific, keep up the great work.--Joanne Deffenbaugh
  • Not only is he skilled at his craft, but he uses wit and humor to gently drive home his point. He is natural and relaxed, and interacts amiably with the audience. The adults enjoy Bob's visits as much as the children! The most important quality of his performances is that they honor our Lord Jesus Christ, and present Him in direct and understandable terms. The focus is never on Bob and his talent, but he uses his talent to focus on Jesus Christ and to magnify Him. Don and Jo Anne Taylor, Del Rey Bible Church Awana Club

    Description of programs:

KINDNESS: A motivational, contemporary message that has it all (humor, story, drama and application). It touches the heart strings! A wonderful lesson for children to see and hear. Recomended for grades PreK-4.

DRUG ABUSE: A pro-active lesson teaches that personal choices have consequences. It reminds listeners that things don't always look the same on the outside as they do on the inside. Drug abuse is a personal choice that hurts. Recommended for grades 2-5.

HAPPY CHILDREN HANDLE CONFLICT WITHOUT VIOLENCE: A motivational topic about using "soft answers." This is a positive, humorous but practical presentation that the students will talk about after the program is over. Recommended for grades K-5.

MANNERS: A character building lesson that teaches manners. It demonstrates that you can use manners in and out of school--even at home. Funny and practical. Recommended for grades PreK-2.

ATTENDANCE: Shows youth how school presence and good study habits build bridges for their future and how poor study habits can lead to criminal behavior. Recommended for grades 3-5.

STEALING: Listening to the right authorities placed over you in life will help you grow strong. Obey positive authority like teachers and the law. Not listening to those in authority can give you a career in jail like Inmate Joe. This will will motivate students to think about their choices and possible consequences. Recommended for grades 2-5.

SELF-ESTEEM: Peer pressure makes people feel bad inside. This drama shows how the careless words of others can cause damage, if you believe them. Inmate Joe plays the role of a picked on person who has a bad self image because he believes the lies of people who are not his friends. It offers a positive solution to overcome poor self-esteem. Recommended for grades 3-5.

COURAGE OF HARRIET TUBMAN: A motivational lesson in demand for youth. It's important to have a dream and work hard to achieve it. This presentation inspires students to dream and have the courage to work to see it come to fruition. Recommended for grades 2-5.
